Children's Safe Harbor's medical program provides certified pediatric forensic nurse examinations for children ages 2-17 through a contract with Texas Children's Hospital.
Children's Safe Harbor's medical program assists child victims in the following ways:
- conducting physical examinations to assess for evidence of physical and/or sexual assault
- documenting the evidence according to certified standards provided by the Texas Office of the Attorney General Sexual Assault Prevention & Crisis Services Division
- criminal court testimony
About Forensic Nursing Programs
Forensic nurse practitioners are specially educated and trained registered nurses who focus on medical forensic care of patients that have experienced sexual assault or abuse.
Forensic nurses that have successfully completed and maintained the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner certification with the Office of the Attorney General for the State of Texas. Referrals for Forensic nursing examinations shall be determined during the post-staffing of forensic interviews with confirmed outcries of sexual abuse and/or prior to forensic interviews in the circumstances of reported acute sexual assaults.
